The Citizenship and Immigration Organization of Canada collaborates with accredited and regulated professionals to provide a full range of immigration advice and logistical services aimed at facilitating the settlement and integration of newcomers in Quebec and other Canadian provinces.
Various immigration statuses allow individuals to settle and work in Canada. Across this vast territory of nine provinces, Quebec is responsible for selecting economic immigrants.
Each year, Quebec welcomes numerous foreign workers to meet its demand for skilled labor.
Montreal, with its dynamic information technology industry, primarily attracts immigrants with professional experience in this field.
If you are planning to work in Quebec, you may want to know the different options for obtaining a work permit, a crucial document required to work in the province.
Canada and Quebec follow a selective immigration policy, where only skilled foreign workers meeting specific criteria—such as education level, professional experience, age, and language skills—are eligible for a work permit.
For skilled workers not covered by specific programs, the general process involves finding an employer willing to hire them and support them through the immigration procedures.
Canadian employers must demonstrate that they cannot find qualified Canadian citizens or permanent residents for the available positions, and that hiring foreign workers will not negatively impact the Canadian labor market.
To this end, the employer must submit an application for a Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) as well as a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). If Immigration Canada and Immigration Quebec approve, the foreign worker can obtain a temporary work permit for a maximum duration of two years.
Some categories of workers are exempt from the LMIA and benefit from special programs that facilitate obtaining a temporary work permit. This applies in particular to young workers aged 20 to 55 from countries with specific agreements with Quebec and Canada. Programs such as the Working Holiday Permit (WHV) and the Young Professionals (YP) permit allow for work permits of up to two years.
